ATTAKUS once again highlights the female characters of its favorite authors with this statuette inspired by the comic series La Cabaret des muses by Gradimir Smudja. *** The series in 4 volumes The Cabaret des Muses is inspired by the life of the painter Toulouse-Lautrec in Montmartre, and his meetings with Van Gogh, Degas, Gauguin. Gradimir Smudja attended the Academy of Arts of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (Belgrade), then painted and became a cartoonist in a newspaper. He has also worked for museums in Germany and some galleries in Switzerland and Italy. He left his country in 1982 challenging the political regime and emigrating to Switzerland. There, he officiates as a painter for a gallerist by reproducing identically the paintings of the great masters of Impressionism.
Eclectic, he makes copies, works on canvas, on wood and he makes caricatures before finding a drawing teacher position in Lucca in Italy where he now lives. In Vincent and Van Gogh, Gradimir Smudja imitates some of Van Gogh’s paintings. For the technique, Gradimir Smudja uses watercolor on paper. In January 2004, “Le Bordel des Muses” addresses another painter: Toulouse-Lautrec with a different technique, watercolor on canvas. “The thread of the Art of Ariadne”, another work of Gradimir Smudja, is rolled out by a little girl, accompanied by her cat in this work.
