Sent on a rescue mission to retrieve his colleague, Astronaut Brent finds himself on the strange yet familiar planet surface amongst a society of intelligent apes and a race of powerful telepathic mutants who are on the verge of war. Brent is captured by the ape army and discovers his long missing friend Taylor in an underground fortress, held in captivity like a savage under the mental control of the jailer.
