The American Civil War was in many ways, the first modern war, not just in terms of the technology that was used, but also in areas of strategy. Perhaps the most notable Civil War leader who saw the need to make war in a new way was William Tecumseh Sherman. Sherman recognized that that America’s Civil War was a clash not just of armies in the field. He saw that if the North could damage the South’s ability and willingness to make war, the duration of the conflict could be substantially reduced. Sherman proved to be very successful at this, though ironically, forces led by “Uncle Billy” did not win any major battles. They did, however, win campaigns because of Sherman’s determination, insight and strategic genius, and went on to make a tremendous contribution towards ending the war.
