Jean-Michel Basquiat – 1/3 Scale Hypereal Artist Statue
Departing from what we had done, the very popular movie characters, to working on a portrait of a real life artist, it was as if JND Studios was starting over from scratch. JND artists are not merely trying to imitate life. They are trying to capture and express the character. The final output came from the decision to try to paint a picture of its own. The person is not the only subject matter. Gox, the main artist, combined different objects and pieced the puzzles together so that the collector could view a single piece of art.
In order to capture the character, Gox focused on Jean-Michel’s facial expression. He wanted a hint of disappointment on his face, imagining what he must have felt when he was trying to become a star by selling postcards, and things weren’t going his way. JND Studios is commercially driven, but we love it when collectors respond to the messages we express in our work. Gox and KOJUN spoke extensively about trying to express the detailed emotion, and we believe you collectors will be able to see these details in different parts of this unique piece.
“Looking at that situation with today’s perspective – how ironic it is ” and how Basquiat at that time cannot have known about his future fame, perhaps what he needed most in that moment was the applause he receives now. This was the intention behind the design of this statue.
“This is precisely the motivation behind why JND produced the Basquiat statue. ” JND is inevitably a company that is financially driven. Making profit is an unavoidable goal. In this context, the decision to take on the Basquiat statue may be considered highly contradictory. Why? Because creating commercial success with such a subject matter is almost impossible.
I believe that this project could be an opportunity to show art fans worldwide that there is a talented and innovative company in Korea called IND Studio, previously unknown to the global art community. Through this transformation, I am confident that JND will be loved by not only figure fans but also by many others as a more valuable company. I aspire to be a star like Basquiat, but I don’t want to become a star after my death like Basquiat.
