Proud and unyielding, King Thranduil is an Elf Lord of a different kind than Elrond or Galadriel. For hundreds of years he has ruled the Silvan Woodland Realm in what was once Greenwood the Great, holding court beneath the forest floor in a labyrinthine palace carved from the living rock. Like the Elf Kings of old, safe in his hidden empire he expects to outlast the turmoils of the world of Men, Dwarves and Orcs, for since the fall of the Dwarf realm of Erebor none in the north can rival his wealth or power, nor challenge his dominion.
When Thorin Oakenshield and his Company of Dwarves are apprehended trespassing near the doors to Thranduil’s halls the King quickly guesses the true object of Thorin’s quest. It is to the Lonely Mountain that Thorin’s eye is drawn, to the treasure hoard of ancient Erebor that lies beneath it, taken by the Dragon Smaug. And it is the Arkenstone, the heart of the Mountain, by which the Longbeards claim their right to rule, that he seeks. There is no love lost between Thranduil and Thorin’s line, who blame each other for the devastation and personal losses wrought by the Dragon. The cold Elvenking will sooner see Oakenshield rot in a stone cell for a century than aid him in a quest that will at best install a bitter rival in power beneath the peak, and at worst bring Dragon-fire down upon them all.
